3rd Six Weeks: Week 4 Benchmarks
Students will be benchmark testing for both Mathematics and Reading.
Monday: Mathematics Benchmark
Tuesday: Reading Benchmark
Wednesday: Six Weeks Examinations: Writing and History
Thursday: Six Weeks Examinations: Reading
Friday: Normal Schedule Resumes
6th Grade Honors Science: Week 4
We will continue to dwell into the transfer of Thermal Energy and how this is used to differentiate between HEAT and TEMPERATURE.
- The Science Six Weeks Exam is scheduled for Tuesday, December 13.
6th Grade District Science Fair Winners
These students will be advancing to the Regional Science Fair in Brownsville, which will be taking place in February.
- 1st Place in Animal Science: Edgar Garza & Alonzo Trevino w/ Ants and Sugar
- 2nd Place in Earth & Environmental Science: Brianna Elizondo w/Why Don't Oceans Freeze Yet Lakes Do?
- 2nd Place in Engineering : Osbaldo Marroquin & Armando Moreno w/ Turbine Challenge.
The District Science Fair is a great way for the students to understand the importance of science in our world as well as learn from each others findings through their projects.
Welcome back hope you all had an amazing Thanksgiving holiday week, but now its time to get refocused and continue your academic development.

Energy Review:
Kinetic & Potential Energy: The Law of Conservation of Energy
· Introduction to Energy
o What is energy?
o Compare kinetic and potential energy
· Can objects have potential & kinetic energy at the same time?
· Discuss gravitational potential energy; give examples
· Describe mechanical energy
o Is the sum of potential and kinetic energy:
o Can be made up entirely of potential, entirely of kinetic, or both.
|
· Discuss the different forms energy can take
o Mechanical energy
o Sound energy
o Electromagnetic energy
o Chemical energy
o Thermal energy
o Nuclear energy
o Electrical energy
· Provide examples of different forms of energy.
|
· What is: The Law of Conservation of Energy
o Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only change into a different form.
· What is an energy transformation?
o Discuss energy transformations and demonstrate examples of these transformations.
|
Thermal Energy and Heat:
· How is temperature related to kinetic energy?
o Explain and discuss the kinetic theory of matter.
o Compare the speeds of particles in solids, liquids, and gases.
· Review Kinetic theory of matter
o Think fast Questions
§ Which of the following has particles with a higher average kinetic energy?
· Present examples: Steam or ice water, etc..
§ Which of the following has particles with a lower average kinetic energy?
· Present examples: Snow or water, etc..
|
· Define temperature, degree, and thermometer.
o Students must create a word triangle for each of the vocabulary terms in their Science Journal.
· Relate temperature to kinetic energy of particles.
o High Temp. = higher kinetic energy
o Low Temp. = lower kinetic energy
§ Due to particle movement
· Measure temperature using different scales.
o Fahrenheit
o Celsius
o Kelvin
·
|
· Thermal Energy & Heat
· What is the relationship between heat and temperature?
o Define: Thermal Energy & Heat
§ Discuss and differentiate between thermal energy, temperature, & heat.
· Small groups activity: Heat Race:
§ Give each group a zipped plastic bag with an ice cube inside. Instruct groups to agree on a way to melt the ice cube without opening the bag. They can use anything in the room to help: sunlight, warm air, body heat, etc…
§ After all groups have finished, discuss how long each method took.
