4th Six Weeks (Week 3)

Monday:
·         How is temperature related to kinetic energy?
o   Explain and discuss the kinetic theory of matter.
o   Compare the speeds of particles in solids, liquids, and gases.
·         Review Kinetic theory of matter
o   Think fast Questions
§  Which of the following has particles with a higher average kinetic energy?
·         Present examples: Steam or ice water, etc..
§  Which of the following has particles with a lower average kinetic energy?
·         Present examples: Snow or water, etc..

Tuesday:
·         Define temperature, degree, and thermometer.
o   Students must create a word triangle for each of the vocabulary terms in their Science Journal.
·         Relate temperature to kinetic energy of particles.
o   High Temp. = higher kinetic energy
o   Low Temp. = lower kinetic energy
§  Due to particle movement
·         Measure temperature using different scales.
o   Fahrenheit
o   Celsius
o   Kelvin
·

Wednesday:
·         Thermal Energy & Heat
·         What is the relationship between heat and temperature?
o   Define: Thermal Energy & Heat
§  Discuss and differentiate between thermal energy, temperature, & heat.
·         Small groups activity: Heat Race:
§  Give each group a zipped plastic bag with an ice cube inside.  Instruct groups to agree on a way to melt the ice cube without opening the bag. They can use anything in the room to help: sunlight, warm air, body heat, etc…
§  After all groups have finished, discuss how long each method took.

Thursday:
·         Quick Lab
o   Exploring Temperature
Build a simple model thermometer

Friday:
·         Thermal Energy in a Bottle Demonstration
o   Demonstration will show students thermal energy in action.
o   Define: conduction, conductor, insulator, and radiation
§  Students must create a word triangle for each of the vocabulary terms in their Science Journal.
