6th Grade Science (4th Six Weeks) Week 5: Introduction to Matter

Science
Monday:
·         Review:  Temperature, Thermal Energy & Heat
o   How are heat and energy related to each other?
o   What is measured when we measure temperature?
o   Discuss the difference between thermal energy and temperature.
o   Differentiate between heat and thermal energy.
o   How can heat affect the state of an object?
Class discussion/review of Chapter lesson review on page 219

Tuesday:
·         What is matter?
o   Discuss with class what matter is
·         What is mass
·         What is weight
·         How does mass differ from weight?
·         Discuss how to measure mass and weight.
o   Using a balance and a scale

Wednesday:
·         Measuring Space
o   What is volume?
·         How is the amount of space occupied by matter measured?
o   V=L x W x H of a rectangular prism
·         How can volume be determined?
o   Using a formula
o   Using water displacement

Thursday:
·         Density
·         What is density?
·         How are mass, volume, and density all related
·         How is density determined?
o   Formula: D = M ÷ V
·         Calculate density, mass, or volume given two of the three variables using Density formula.

Friday:
·         Introduction to Matter Review
o   Review
o   Mass, Volume, and Density

·         What is Matter?
o   Lab on Volume and Density
o   Formulas:
§  V = L x W x H
§  D = M ÷ V
